BALANCE

SERVICE ABOVE SELF

INDEPENDENCE

Balance is something that can be difficult to achieve and maintain, but ultimately balance is often dependent on the person.  In order for a person to have balance in their life, they must have prioritized what is important to them.  I have found balance in several apsects of my life.  I have decided to major in an extremely technical and rigorous field, biomedical engineering, but I am able to express my creative side through my involvement in the Michigan Marching Band.  Band has taught me so much more than how to play my trombone and march with perfect technique.  It has taught me discipline, dedication, persistence, and time management just to name a few.  I have also achieved balance in my life by insisting on being organized and detail oriented, but also taking the time to step back and look at the big picture of my life.  If I were to get caught up in every little thing that went wrong, I would not be as happy as I am today.  Also, keeping the big picture view on life helps to keep me motivated to achieve my long term goals.  I have also maintained balance between my academics and extracurriculars.  With my involvment as the Member Outreach Officer for the Society of Women Engineers and Committee Chair for Tau Beta Sigma, there are times that this balance can be difficult to maintain.  It is most important to realize that priorities will change on a yearly, monthly, weekly, or even daily basis.  Balance is something I have achieved, but will always be something that will need to focus on.  Currently, I have achieved a balance that makes me happy, motivated, and excited for what the future will bring.
